Christian Benteke

As we go into tonight’s game with Southampton we sit in a precarious position. Perception would lead us to think we are better off than we really are.

After a run of four straight wins, five wins in seven, you could be forgiven for thinking we are in a healthy position. This isn’t the case.

Southampton are just three points ahead of us in the table so a victory over them would see us draw level with them on points but with a inferior goal difference.

Glass Half Empty

However, being a long time Palace fan it is natural for me to look at the worse case scenario and presume that is what’s going to happen in order so I can get used to the idea.

If results go against us tonight we could find ourselves just one point and one place above the relegation zone.

Depending on Hull’s result at the weekend (they are away to Manchester City) we could be going into the game at home to Arsenal on Monday in the bottom three.

In Reality

In reality, while Hull could well beat Middlesbrough at home tonight and we could lose at Southampton, it is somewhat unlikely that Manchester City will lose to them at the weekend… Famous last words… Does anyone remember Oldham in 1994?

But seriously, we have a tough run of games coming up, four are away and five are at home. If we can get another three points tonight then we’ll at least put another couple of teams between us and the drop.

So while points might not be a cushion, a few teams can be.
