As if travelling to play Liverpool isn’t already a tough enough game, we will be without someone who has become a rock in the heart of our defence.
As things stand, going in to the game at Southampton, we have Scott Dann out injured for a few weeks, maybe the season. James Tomkins took a knock to the calf and is expected to at least make the bench tonight.
So that leaves us with three recognised centre backs and one of those has been playing at full back ever since he signed for us.
The three players are Damien Delaney, Martin Kelly and Mamadou Sakho. Unfortunately, Premier League rules state that a player on loan can’t play against his parent club so Sakho can’t play at Anfield.
So, if Tomkin’s injury is a little worse than expected or if he aggravates his injury we could be travelling to Anfield with a centre back pairing of Damien Delaney and Martin Kelly.
I was there in 1989 for the 9-0 mauling, we actually didn’t play that bad, and while I doubt that would happen again it doesn’t inspire confidence.
The Premier League really needs to revise that rule because it is utterly needless and utterly silly to suggest a player would have a conflict of interest. They are professionals who would want to impress both managers.
